Fun guy seeks recognition
Here I grow,
Upon a log-
Small and black and white.
Protuding into the darkness
On Halloween night.
Not sure about my genus,
Though I've looked through the leaves.
I'd try the mighty google
But I have trouble with the keys.
So I'll just keep on growing,
So quiet and so slowly-
While all around me chase their tales
I'm cool with being lowly.

I saw the exact same things on a tree trunk at my local National Trust estate - I have no idea what they are, apart from being fungal, but they are very cleverly disguised as bird droppings! (and they say nature isn't clever... hrmph!)
I thought it was some cat hiding in a tree with its legs sticking out...yes, I know...haven't quite worked out the logistics for this yet...but it is what came into my brain first.
Glad you're back, Jeremy. I'll be interested to see what develops.

Thanks for these comments. I thought I would have sunk into obscurity by now.i haven't been a very diligent blogger lately.
Annie- It is some sort of fungus. Still trying to find out which.
Vintagepretty- never thought of bird droppings. Who said nature isn't clever?!
Clare- Easily confused with a cat, obviously.... I wonder what will develop too, but it's best to expect little of interest.
Paris,m'dear- Merci beaucoup. I think you hit he nail on the head.

I've just looked through your photographs. Fabulous. Clear, bold, yet sort of quirky. Great combination. I dont know your part of the world but you've created a fascinating glimpse of it. Enjoyed them.
